Street Closures and Parking Guidelines

In observance of Howard University’s 156th Commencement Convocation, the Office of Parking and Transportation Services will implement the following parking lot guidelines and shuttle service for Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11, 2024:  

Street Closures 

The following streets will be closed from Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11, 2024; 

  • Howard Pl. (between Georgia Ave NW and 6th St. NW),
  • 6th Street NW (between Howard Pl. NW and Fairmont St. NW),
  • Bison Blvd (between Girard St NW and Fairmont St NW)

During these street closures, only permit holders will have access to their assigned parking lots. Vendors contracted to set up at various events should be advised that they can only access restricted areas for setup. Once setup is complete, they must move their cars to the visitor parking lot.  

Parking Lot Closures 

The following parking lots will be closed from Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11, 2024:  

  • Childers Hall (Lot A)
  • School of Business (Lot C)
  • Founders (Lot B)
  • Burr (Lot J)

During these street closures, only permit holders will have access to their assigned parking lots. Vendors contracted to set up various events should be advised that they can only access restricted areas for setup. Once setup is complete, they must move their cars to the visitor parking lot.

Parking for Individual School Ceremonies 

From Thursday, May 9 through Friday, May 10, 2024, graduates and their guests may purchase a daily permit for $10 using the parking app runparking.com. Students with a valid HU parking permit must park in their assigned parking lot. Please be reminded that parking rules will be enforced. If you take the liberty to utilize metered parking along public streets, please adhere to the parking sign restrictions to avoid receiving violations (i.e., parking ticket). Guests must park in allowable spaces and follow the rules on designated parking signs.

Daily permit parking is allowed in the following lots

  • Banneker South – 2345 Sherman Ave. NW
  • East Towers – 2200 8th St. NW
  • Howard Center – 2235 8th St. NW
  • Drew – 511 Harvard St. NW

Complimentary shuttle services will be available to transport guests to individual school ceremonies. To locate the nearest shuttle stops in real time, please utilize the ride systems app (available in both Google Play and Apple App Store).

  1. Download “Ride Systems” app from the app store
  2. “Select Transit Agency” screen will appear
  3. Select Howard University
  4. Select the closest route to your location

Parking for the General Public on May 11, 2024 

The following lots will be open to the public starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. No parking permit will be required. Parking will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  

  • Banneker South – 2345 Sherman Ave. NW
  • East Towers – 2200 8th St. NW
  • Howard Center – 2235 8th St. NW
  • Drew – 511 Harvard St. NW
  • Georgia Ave. – 2704 Georgia Ave. NW

ADA Accommodations 

Guests with ADA accommodation will be required to park at the Howard Center parking lot, across from the Howard University Book Store. Shuttles will be staged in front of the Howard University bookstore to transport guests to Georgia and Fairmont Street. Guests will be required to navigate from the drop-off location to the main yard. Contact parking@howard.edu for additional information regarding ADA parking accommodations. 

Commencement Shuttle Service

  • No complimentary shuttle service will be provided to Capital One Arena on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
