Speaker & Honorary Degree Recipients

The 2026 Commencement speaker, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and fellow honorary degree awardees reflect excellence in public policy, business, higher education, music, and leadership, including Rosalind Brewer, interim president of Spelman College and chair emerita of its board; Antoine Garibaldi, Ph.D. (B.A. ’73), president emeritus at the University of Detroit Mercy; Robert (Bob) Iger, immediate past CEO of The Walt Disney Company; and, posthumously, the Reverend Richard Smallwood (B.A. ’71, M.Div. ’04), iconic music composer and choral director.

Tickets & Regalia

Tickets are required for the main Commencement Convocation for all graduates on Saturday, May 9. Each graduate will receive four tickets to distribute to guests. Ticket policies for the additional separate school and college recognition ceremonies are determined by the deans.

Clear Bag and Prohibited Items Policy

Howard’s Clear Bag Policy is in effect for all Commencement Week activities. Only small clear bags no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ are permitted except for medical and baby bags. Bags will be subject to screening. Note that balloons or signs larger than 11” x 17” are not permitted for Saturday’s Commencement Convocation.

Commencement Participation Policy

Students will be eligible to participate in Commencement Convocation and recognition ceremonies only if they have successfully completed all academic degree requirements and fulfilled all financial obligations for graduation.

The 2026 Class Reunion Weekend is a special time for alumni to reconnect with classmates, revisit cherished spaces, and participate in treasured traditions.
