Information for Attendees with Disabilities at Convocation

Howard University is excited to share the full Commencement experience with attendees, including those with accessibility needs. Please find the answers to questions about accessibility below.

Accessible Seating

How do I request accessible seating?

To request accessible seating, please fill out a request form.
 

Can a companion sit with me?

Yes. Each guest in the accessible seating area may be accompanied by one companion. Event staff will direct you to accessible seating.

Which entrance do I use for accessible seating? 

Although all four gates to The Yard are accessible; we recommend you utilize Gate 1 and 2 to be closest to accessible seating.

Transportation

Is accessible parking available?

Yes. Accessible parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis for guests with valid disability plates or placards in designated lots near campus. A designated drop-off area for guests with mobility needs is located near Gate 1 The Yard. We recommend all individuals with accessibility needs park at Howard Center.

Are shuttles accessible? 

Shuttle service is available from designated parking areas to The Yard. All shuttles are ADA-accessible and equipped to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility devices.

Restrooms and Medical

Are restrooms accessible? 

Yes. All restroom stations throughout The Yard are ADA-accessible and include changing stations. Additional portable accessible units are available near the perimeter of the event area.

Is there a first aid station?

Yes, a first aid station will be on-site and staffed with trained medical personnel. In case of an emergency, alert the nearest Howard staff or security personnel.

Assistive Services

Will closed captioning be available? 

Closed captioning is available on the live stream.

Are assisted listening devices provided?

Assisted listening devices will not be provided by the university. Guests are welcome to bring personal noise reduction or listening devices. Howard University is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items.

Are service animals permitted? 

Yes. Working service animals are welcome at the ceremony. Emotional support animals and pets are not permitted.

Does the university provide wheelchairs?

Unfortunately, Howard University does not provide wheelchairs. Guests must bring their own mobility aids.
